Presenters

Guidant Law Firm, PLC

J. Phillip Glasscock, Esq. CPA-ret.

With more than 35 years of experience in business transactions, litigation and estate planning, J. Phillip Glasscock has a simple mission at Guidant: help clients make money and keep it.

Rated AV-Preeminent® by Martindale-Hubbell®, Phil approaches business representation differently than many other attorneys. He typically starts with ascertaining the client’s exit strategy and other long-term plans so that all efforts are designed to achieve lasting success. Likewise, Phil’s approach with estate planning clients is focused on expediency and efficiency with the goal of “making it easy” in all respects.

Phil’s client roster has included public companies and three generations of family owners of private companies. He has worked with manufacturers, international distributors, professional services firms and family-owned businesses. With substantial experience in multistate transactions, he has completed more than a billion dollars of successful real estate closings throughout the United States. He was honored to oversee the first successful FCC spectrum license sale in Washington D.C. and the first successful large, multi-engine jet aircraft auction, selling aircraft to buyers in Europe, South America and Africa. In addition to negotiating business deals in the U.S., Phil has been tapped to oversee deals in Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom, France, Spain, Japan, Korea, China, Sweden, Germany, and Russia.

Phil owned and operated a law firm in Scottsdale, Arizona for 25 years, successfully growing the business and becoming known as a top-tier attorney, even as the Great Recession riddled Corporate America. During this time, he cultivated a relationship with attorney Gary Smith after the two continually met as opposing counsel. The mutual respect ultimately led to their association at Guidant.

Phil has additional experience as the in-house general counsel for a large regional real estate development firm and a multi-national product manufacturer. As such, he was responsible for acquisition, sales, distribution, employment, and joint venture contracts as well as supervision of the company’s physical facilities and human relations departments. He handled competitive strategies and managed substantial “bet the company” litigation in the U.S. and abroad. One example resulted in several successful judgments, ultimately leading to one of the largest judgments in Arizona up to that time.

After earning a Juris Doctorate from Arizona State University, Phil assisted the management consulting department of an accounting firm in Phoenix. There, he structured and documented real estate and R&D securities offerings, conducted strategic business planning sessions and provided key business advice to large and small business clients. Phil is a retired Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

D. Lamar Hawkins, Esq.

Attuned to the complexities of bankruptcy code, he advises both buyers and sellers with significant bankruptcy sales and secures favorable financial resolutions for his clients through out-of-court workouts or Chapter 7, 11, or 13 bankruptcy. Lamar offers extensive knowledge in bankruptcy planning, local rules and procedures, and associated tax issues, confidently guiding his clients through each step of this process. He also serves as a valued community and industry resource on bankruptcy, regularly invited to share insights at Arizona State Bar events and at other civil, legal and religious groups.

Throughout his career, Lamar has assisted with the reorganization of numerous business entities, often serving as a pivotal negotiator. Notably, he oversaw the buyout of Great Western Produce, a regional broker of agricultural products, the reorganization of numerous doctor, lawyer, accounting, and other professional groups and organizations, restaurants, small businesses, and numerous real estate ventures. In the real estate sphere, Lamar has served on behalf of both the controlling and non-controlling equity ownership.  Importantly, Lamar is a community leader in handling the issues for the individual that is impacted most by the financial troubles, achieving numerous individual Chapter 11 reorganizations.

Before working to create Guidant Law, PLC, Lamar was a shareholder at Aiken Schenk Hawkins & Riccardi P.C. for nearly three decades. He was instrumental in the favorable outcomes for numerous cases, including Inselman, in which he eased “responsible person” liability for the unpaid transaction privilege taxes of a corporation and limited liability company.

Lamar was voted a Super Lawyer by his peers and holds that status from 2011 through the present, and was voted by his peers as a Top Attorney in Arizona and Best Lawyer in America.
