AzVMA Launches Foundation for Student Scholarships
Tuesday, March 19, 2019
The AzVMA has launched a foundation that will initially focus on providing scholarships for Arizona veterinary students enrolled in an AVMA accredited college of veterinary medicine to help offset the cost of a veterinary medical education. The Arizona Veterinary Medical Foundation (AzVMF) will present five one-thousand dollar scholarships to third-year students in its 2019 inaugural year, with the intent of expanding its services to include disaster relief and other veterinary needs.
AzVMA believes in investing in the education of veterinary students to help empower them to achieve and exceed their goals. To be eligible, students will be required to meet a set of criteria that includes the following: demonstrate a connection to the state of Arizona, demonstrate academic excellence, demonstrate involvement in university affiliated organizations and leadership activities, demonstrate a commitment to organized veterinary medicine, and demonstrate financial need. In addition, applicants must be student members of the AzVMA, which they can apply for at the time of submission of the scholarship application.
AzVMA has entered into a partnership with the American Veterinary Medical Foundation to tap into its expansive experience in managing national scholarship programs. The AVMF will assist AzVMA with the promotion of the scholarship, with the distribution of the application to veterinary colleges, and will initially screen applicants for eligibility prior to review and selection by the AzVMF Board. This partnership will ensure that Arizona-connected veterinary students are informed of this opportunity and have access to the application process.
AzVMA members will have the opportunity to support the foundation through contributions that will be tax deductible to the extent of the law. Promotional materials are being created and will be distributed by mail/email that will include donation forms. A web page is also being developed which will allow for donations online.
The AzVMF Board is chaired by AzVMA immediate past president, Dr. Michael Sorum, Sorum Veterinary Services and includes AzVMA vice president, Dr. Melissa Riensche, Desert Veterinary Medical Specialists, AzVMA secretary/treasurer, Dr. Kara Thomas, Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Peter Mundschenk, Arizona State Veterinarian and AzVMA past president and current finance chair, Dr. John Samuelson, Madison Animal Hospital and Grooming PLC.
AzVMA invites and encourages the veterinary community to support the effort to invest in students of veterinary medicine and to sustain the foundation so it can serve the profession through the delivery of services designed to advance veterinary practice.
