About the Arizona Opioid Epidemic Act
Did you know? On January 26, 2018, the Governor signed SB1001, known as the “2018 Arizona Opioid Epidemic Act.” The new requirements related to veterinarians became effective on April 26, 2018 that “requires health professionals who are authorized to prescribe or dispense schedule II controlled substances AND who have a valid U.S. DEA registration number to complete at least 3 hours of opioid, substance use disorder or addiction-related continuing education each license renewal cycle.”
The opioid CE requirement to renew your Arizona veterinary license is for each licensing period, per the Arizona State Veterinary Medical Examining Board (click here to read more about this requirement).
Note: July 2023: Veterinarians exempt from new DEA eight-hour education requirement (read article).

Fall Expedition
August 31 – September 8, 2024
The Arizona Veterinary Medical Association (AzVMA) is excited to announce a fall African study expedition that will take you behind the scenes to work closely with a resident South African wildlife veterinarian, Dr. William Fowlds! This 10-day hands-on trip is scheduled to leave Phoenix on August 31, 2024 and arrive back on September 8, 2024.
This Wildlife Study Expedition is approved by the Arizona Academy of Veterinary Practice for 20 hours of continuing education credits for both veterinarians and technicians. It is currently pending RACE approval.
About Expedition
Accompanied throughout the expedition by a South African wildlife veterinarian, this hands-on African veterinary study expedition gives veterinarians the chance to learn more about Africa’s wildlife in a unique way, incorporating modern day conservation and the need for hands-on wildlife management.
This expedition takes veterinarians behind the scenes, affording the opportunity to interact with a wildlife veterinarian, researchers and guides, while discovering the fantastic world of wildlife in Southern Africa.
Participants will be a part of antelope, rhino, buffalo & giraffe immobilizations, game drives & various lectures. Participate in hands-on wildlife veterinary management procedures and in so doing contribute financially to wildlife conservation through your participation. During this expedition, you will work with antelope, the iconic endangered rhino, and African predators, under the watchful eye of your wildlife veterinarian. The trip starts with an overnight stop in Johannesburg to facilitate arrivals, and then heads into the wild for more traditional wildlife viewing activities, making sure that first-time visitors don’t miss out, before heading to a third venue where you’ll participate in wildlife management procedures on the reserve.

Join us for a once-in-a-lifetime experience and help conserve Africa’s wildlife! There are only 10 spots available. This trip will be filled on a first come first serve basis! There will be a waitlist available once the seats are filled.
